Chichester Harbour AONB is a protected coastal area offering exceptional opportunities for sailing, wildlife observation, and peaceful walking trails amid saltmarshes, estuaries, and charming seaside villages.
Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers approximately 11,500 hectares of coastal landscape primarily within West Sussex and parts of Hampshire, England. It comprises a large natural harbor protected by designated status since 1964 to conserve its scenic beauty, diverse ecology, and historic features. The harbor is characterized by extensive saltmarshes, winding creeks, mudflats, and woodlands, bordered by small ports and villages such as Bosham, Emsworth, and Itchenor. The sheltered waters of the harbor provide excellent conditions for sailing and other water-based recreation, making it popular among local boaters and visitors alike. Ecologically, it supports internationally important bird populations, including wintering wildfowl and migratory species, and has several Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). Visitors can explore numerous walking routes along the shores and through the woods, including stretches of the South Downs Way and coastal footpaths. Historic points of interest, such as the medieval Chichester Cathedral nearby and remnants of fishing and boat-building heritage, enrich the experience. The area’s peaceful beaches, marinas, and countryside make it appealing for photography, birdwatching, kayaking, and cycling. Facilities for visitors include small visitor centers, sailing clubs, and nature reserves, ensuring a balanced experience between outdoor activities and environmental conservation. The mild maritime climate contributes to a pleasant visiting season throughout most of the year.
